José Gregorio o “Davis” (arriba en la foto) como lo conocen en Leticia, de padre brasilero y madre colombiana, es un boxeador amazonense de 23 años y toda una figura en Leticia. Todas las noches en el Parque Santander, de siete a nueve de la noche, se reúne con los “chicos” para entrenar y enseñar boxeo. De mirada fija, no pierde detalle alguno. Sus movimientos al hablar son lentos, pero al pelear son veloces. El parado siempre es firme y de vez en cuando baja el brazo para tentar a su enemigo, dejando su rostro al descubierto. Tiene trucos, tiene fuerza y es un ejemplo de muchos jóvenes de Leticia.

Davis decidió ser boxeador cuando tenía 14 años. Su afición a la serie animada Dragon Ball Z y a las “montadas” de las que era víctima por parte de sus primos, le dieron coraje para amenazarlos de que un día crecería, aprendería a pelear, sería el más fuerte del mundo y les iba a pegar a todos. Pero no eran palabras sueltas de rabia, eran promesas que ninguno esperó Davis, fuera a cumplir.

Empezó a entrenar con un grupo de jóvenes que solían reunirse en un parque para practicar. No había pasado un año cuando ya no tenía tabique y varias costillas rotas le recordarían el duro entrenamiento de un deporte como el boxeo.

El proceso era largo, era una cuestión de imitar y de seguir los consejos de los mayores, de quienes ya llevaban más tiempo en el deporte. La primera vez que peleó fue con un contrincante que tenía ocho meses de entrenamiento, y él tan sólo tenía dos meses. Después de que el entrenador autorizara la pelea, Davis se paró en frente de su contrincante. Con 15 años, casi 16, perdió la pelea. Pero dejó un rastro que el entrenador no perdió de vista, quien desde ahí empezó a entrenar a Davis con más fuerza.

Pasaron tres años cuando en el 2007 tuvo su primera pelea, en Iquitos, Perú, de donde traería medalla de bronce al vencer a Elmer Marín. Un año después vendría por la medalla de plata en el mismo lugar al vencer a Jonathan Sánchez. El 2009 fue su momento, cuando en sus manos reposó la medalla de oro. En aquél año los peruanos se enamoraron de aquél joven que con 17 años y en 40 segundos del primer round, desplomó a un brasilero. La segunda pelea en aquél año fue con un peruano, Rubiel Rodríguez, a quien le quitaría la medalla de oro. Los peruanos se enamoraron del poderío de éste colombiano, pero no dejarían que Davis se quedara con la medalla de oro. Así que en Julio de 2010, en Leticia, el hermano de Rubiel Rodríguez vendría por la revancha. Los Rodríguez cayeron bajo los guantes de Davis.

En el 2016 se acercan los juegos nacionales, pero en el amazonas no hay apoyo al deporte. El Estado no brinda espacios ni ofrece un presupuesto para pagar entrenadores, deportistas ni para comprar material. Varios entrenadores sacaron provecho de los muchachos y del talento de los boxeadores de Leticia, prometiéndoles sumas de $400.000.oo por pelea, y dejándolos sin dinero al finalizar los encuentros. Muchas de las promesas terminaron en mentiras, y muchos de los sueños nunca se hicieron realidad. “…peleábamos, nos moreteábamos, llegábamos a Leticia y la plata se la llevaban para otro lado. Varias veces nos hacían eso, nos llevaban, peleábamos, llegamos a Leticia y… adiós muchachos. Yo hablé con los pelados y les dije: nosotros no somos payasos de nadie, hagámoslo por nosotros mismos y nos retiramos de aquél entrenador en ese momento.” señala Davis.

El boxeo no es importante en Leticia, o al menos así lo siento Davis: “el boxeo no es importante porque simplemente no le dicen a uno felicitación, o lo aplauden. Nadie viene y te dice: oye! te doy este par de guantes para que sigas boxeando. Nadie le pone empeño” Davis, así como otros boxeadores, han seguido y tomado como ejemplo a los máximos exponentes del boxeo en Leticia y que son conocidos como “El Chilo” y “El Toli”: “Ellos eran fuertes, técnicos y rápidos. Pero ahora son veteranos, cuchos. Nosotros nos inspirábamos en ellos” advierte Davis.

En los entrenamientos, Davis es muy estricto y requiere a quienes entrenan: orden, disciplina y puntualidad, pero sobre todo, respeto. Porque el boxeo es un arma. Les advierte a los jóvenes que no los quiere ver peleando en la calle, que si eso sucede, el entrenamiento termina para siempre. Nunca ha peleado fuera de un rin, y le da miedo hacerlo, no sólo porque puede herir a alguien, sino porque lo pueden matar. Como él dice: “una discusión cualquiera, no aguanta”.

Davis cree que el deporte promueve paz, y lo ha visto en sus entrenamientos, muchos jóvenes pasaban su tiempo consumiendo drogas, buscando problemas o parados en esquinas de la ciudad haciendo nada. Él pasaba por sus lados y los invitaba a entrenar “Uno se dedica al deporte y se olvida de las cosas malas. El boxeo hace que uno se olvide hasta de la mujer! Fumar es malo, el licor es malo, trasnocharse es malo, estar en las esquinas haciendo nada es malo, lo debilita. Se genera más paz, más tranquilidad con el deporte. Yo he sacado a varios pelados de la calle y ahora están conmigo entrenando”. En la actualidad, son cerca de 22 jóvenes que entrenan todos los días con Davis. El menor de ellos tiene 16 años. Son jóvenes que decidieron apostarle al deporte y alejarse de los problemas que una vida de calle trae, también de las drogas y del crimen organizado.

El 5 de octubre del año 2009 empezó a trabajar como auxiliar de laboratorio para Manuel Elkin Patarroyo y se retiró el 3 de febrero del 2014, pues no tenía el tiempo para entrenar, el horario era muy pesado. “…él hablaba conmigo –Elkin Patarroyo- como un amigo, y no como un jefe. Él me dice Gollo, siempre me decía: ¿Cuándo vamos a pelear? Y yo le contestaba: ¿Usted quiere que lo reviente, o qué? Y se reía. Un trato muy bacano con el señor, muy buena persona. Él nunca estuvo de acuerdo que yo boxeara, me decía: ¿qué tal un mal golpe?, me decía que me retirara del boxeo, y yo… ¡qué me voy a retirar si a mi me gusta!” dice Davis con una sonrisa de oreja a oreja.

Además de ser boxeador también es cantante de reggaetón y conduce un tuk tuk para ganarse la vida, pues el boxeo no le da dinero. En el mundo de los artistas es conocido como “El Nene Musical”. Empezó a cantar vallenatos cuando tenía 10 años, cantaba en el colegio, y quería cantar como Nelson Velásquez, su cantante favorito. Cuando estaba empezando el boxeo, tenía 14 años y escuchó los primeros temas de reggaetón, que era lo que pegaba en ese momento. El primer tema lo sacó en el 2013, titulado Victoria, dedicado a su hija que falleció por un soplo en el corazón y quien no aguantó la cirugía que los doctores le hicieron. Así empezó a cantar, y hace poco gravó su último tema: “Quiero tenerte”.

Con los pocos materiales que tienen, se prestan los guantes unos y otros, se hacen turnos para pelear, y se preparan para las próximas peleas que serán el 20 de abril en Leticia, en el coliseo municipal. “Ganar no es sólo tirar al contrincante y hacer nocaut, se gana también buscando la pelea, golpeando, la retaguardia y el pararse para protegerse no ayuda. Siempre hay que atacar” deja como regla David, mientras sigue dirigiendo a los chicos en el entrenamiento.
